Historical account

The museum is an initiative of the government of Kerala and Cochin development authority who played an inspiring role in laying the plan. It is the noisy stadium and due to its distinctive architecture it is loved by all. The journey to create something like stadium started with a growing interest of people amongst people. In 1997, after the construction it received overwhelming response from the crowd and record number of almost 1 lakh people made their way to witness Nehru Cup International football tournament.

International cricket

It was in early months of 1998, football was overlapped by flamboyance of cricket drawing humongous crowd response and love for cricket. The ODI match between arch rivals India and Pakistan on April 2005 was the highest grosser. In April 1998, the first ODI between Indian and Pakistan was played under presence of amazing crowd. The stadium dedicates its one of its stand to Sachin Tendulkar to honour his legacy and contribution he made towards Indian cricket. The Kaloor stadium hosted the retirement match of Sachin Tendulkar which was played against West Indies on November 21st 2013. The stadium is not just used for cricket and football but it is a solemn ground to conduct political rallies, cinema events and exhibition. The renovation was done recently to match the international standard and aesthetic roofing and four lane roads has been constructed to host Indian premier league and Hero Indian Super league.

The First game of Indian Premier League between Kochi Tuskers and Royal Challengers Bangalore was played on April, 2011. Five of the home games of Indian Premier League was played in this stadium beside that stadium hosted semi final games and final game of 2013 Duleep trophy.

Return of the football and India Super league

Although, the Chirag United, the local football club played series of game but never proved instrumental enough to draw massive crowd but with an inauguration of Indian Super League in 2014 and with formation of Kerala Blasters co owned by Sachin Tendulkar, the fan following came back to its track and football started drawing crowd in excess of 55000. The first game of the inaugural edition was played in 6th November, 2016 between Kerala blasters and FC Goa, the another interesting game that drew massive crowd was played between Kerala blasters FC and Chennaiyin FC on 30th November 2014.

Renovation and funding

The renovation called for new pitches, an improved outfield and better drainage facilities, the investment was made by Federal bank and plan was conceived by government of Kerala.

Home ground

The stadium is home ground for Chirag United Club and it regularly host i league football beside that it is an official ground for FIFA under 17 World Cup. On December 11, 2014 FIFA sent a team to inspect a ground and it send a notification to authority to improve the quality of pitch and recently in 2015 AIFF authorized ground as official venue for FIFA under 17 world cup.

Future prospect

With an initiative and plan going to affiliate Trivandrum International Stadium, it is believed that Kaloor International stadium would be used as official football ground. Since Trivandrum stadium is under construction, the Kerala Cricket association is planning to conduct the games in Kaloor and after an establishment of latter, it would be declared as new venue for spectators.
